An Award Nominated Arts & Crafts Inspired Bathroom

Ceramic Tile Merchants were delighted to be named proud finalists in not one, but two categories, in the prestigious TTA Awards.

We were shortlisted for the Best Use of Tile in a Domestic Environment - Bathrooms & Wetrooms prize for our work in a creative renovation project at a domestic residence in East Yorkshire.

Our team worked tirelessly to make the owner’s vision of creating a living environment based on the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement a reality. A labour of love, this project required meticulous research and attention to detail at every stage of the process, and because of this the end result is a tribute to the ideals of the movement.

The Arts and Crafts style typically features rectilinear and angular shapes, styled with decorative motifs, and designer William Morris was one of the champions of the movement. Originating in Belgium and France, the Art Nouveau style ran concurrently, and was characterised by flowing curves, demonstrated in grasses, roses, lilies and vines.

We used tiles from manufacturer Original Style, who developed a stunning range based on this exact style, for a beautiful feature bathroom. The bathroom was planned to reflect the work of Rennie Mackintosh, and throughout the room there’s a strong synergy with the designer’s typical use of sequence and symmetry.

With a stunning metallic freestanding bath no doubt the focal point of the room, the tiles had to work hard to grab the attention, and this is evident in the inspirational perpendicular panel behind the bath. We used a mixture of Colonial White, Palm Green, Carnival Pink and Platinum tiles in a random arrangement, emphasised by black vertical lines.

Synonymous with Mackintosh’s style, the tiled areas are complimented by the juxtaposition of individual floral panels, used on the adjacent walls and in the shower area with its retro shower fittings.

From start to finish we were heavily involved in this project, from the initial raw concepts and design, through to ordering the tiles and finally carrying out the installation, bringing the design to life.
